About varicose veins

Varicose veins, which affect an estimated 10% to 20% of all adults, appear near the surface of the skin as swollen, twisted, blue veins with a "ropy" appearance. Varicose veins develop when the valves in the vein begin to fail, allowing blood to accumulate in the vein. As a result, people who suffer from varicose veins often report that their legs feel heavy and are prone to swelling. Varicose veins may also cause pain or itching. Left untreated, varicose veins are likely to worsen and may result in venous ulceration, a more serious condition.

About spider veins

Spider veins are thin, web-like veins which most often appear on the legs and face. Spider veins develop when a small group of blood vessels located just below the surface of the skin become dilated. Although spider veins may be only a cosmetic concern, they may also accompany the type of underlying vein disease that causes varicose veins. At our Omaha vein center, we can determine whether your spider veins are the result of underlying medical causes. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are not painful, but they can be embarrassing and may keep patients from participating in activities they enjoy.
